Introduction
The Virginia Association of Zoning Officials was organized in 1990
to perpetuate an organized professional support community for the
maintenance of active communication. The Goals of the organization
are:
- Expand the awareness of professional administrators concerning
the authority with which their positions are empowered.
- Provide a reliable communication network for the use of administrators
to develop solutions to various zoning problems.
- Increase the visibility of the organization and develop an identity
as a legitimate member of the public administration organizational
community.
- Provide high quality programs to the members of the organization
with consistently high standards of excellence.
- Continue to improve member development.
- Instill on the part of all members a desire to make VAZO the
model for future organizations.
- Develop a mentoring program among Virginia's zoning officials.
The Virginia Association of Zoning Officials established the Zoning
and Land-Use Scholarship Program in 2005. The scholarship provides
(2) $500 scholarships to be utilized by a member of the Virginia Association of Zoning
Officials to obtain an advanced degree relating to some aspect of zoning
or land-use. The goal of the program is to support research and continuing
education for code enforcement officials.
Eligibility
The applicant must be a member in good standing of the Virginia
Association of Zoning Officials since January 1 of the current year.
The applicant must be pursuing a degree in planning or a closely
related field and be enrolled in an accredited college or university.
A minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 is required of current
students. Funds will be paid to the selected institution or appropriate
department as the scholarship committee sees fit to be used for tuition
or required materials.

The Virginia Association of Zoning Officials established the Zoning
and Land-Use Grant Program in 2005. The grant provides $500 to be used
by the recipient to complete an independent study project relating
to some aspect of zoning or land-use. Included with the grant is a
one-year membership to The Virginia Association of Zoning Officials
and a paid trip to one educational conference sponsored by VAZO. The
goal of the program is to support research and continuing education
focused on Zoning and Code Administration.
Eligibility
The applicant either must be a resident of or employed in the state
of Virginia since January 1 of the current year. The applicant must
be a current student in good academic standing pursuing a degree
in planning or an associated field and be enrolled in an accredited
college or university. Additionally, the applicant must submit a
plan to complete an independent study project relating to zoning
and land-use, the results of which are to be presented to the Awards
and Scholarship Committee at the Fall Conference following the year
that the grant was awarded. The applicant must indicate in the plan
for independent study which semester they plan to complete the project.
Extensions may be granted at the will of the Awards and Scholarship
Committee for multi-year projects. Funds will be paid to the institution
or appropriate department as the scholarship committee sees fit to
be used for materials or as compensation to the student. This grant
includes a one-year membership to the Virginia Association of Zoning
Officials and paid accommodations and registration to one VAZO Training
Conference.
